Scavenger Hunt: Griffin School Gear

The Griffin School Gear is probably the first Witcher armour you’ll find diagrams for, and possibly the first serious armour you’ll craft in The Witcher 3.

The Scavenger Hunt: Griffin School Gear quest was level 11 for me. Wolf was 14 for crafting, Cat and Bear were 17.

So is it worth crafting the Griffin set, or should you wait until you can get Cat, Wolf, or Bear armour instead?

My answer to that would be: yes, the Griffin school armour and weapons are worth crafting. The alternative at low levels is a hotch-potch of other armours (crafted or not), or buy a ready-made set (like the Nilfgaardian set from the Quartermaster at Crow’s Perch), which is what I did in my previous two playthroughs.

This time, though, I thought I’d give the Griffin set a try and it’s a good intermediary medium armour. The weapons are particularly good at low level too.

And, if you want to take the Griffin school all the way to Grandmaster level, then the bonuses for wearing multiple pieces are decent. The six piece Yrden extension is particularly good.

Grandmaster Griffin gear gives these bonuses:
3 pieces: After using Stamina to cast a Sign in its standard mode, the next Sign cast within 3 seconds will be cast in standard mode without using Stamina.
6 pieces: The size of Yrden traps is increased by 40%. While you are within an Yrden trap, Stamina regeneration is increased by 5/s and Sign Intensity by 100%, and damage is reduced by 20%.

What you must make sure you do is collect all the diagrams and do all the Scavenger Hunt quests – for every single Witcher school, because they give good experience, and also lead to lots of other valuable loot as well. Whether you’re going to craft Cat or Bear armour or not – buy/find the diagrams that activate the Scavenger Hunt quests ASAP, then do all the quests.

The initial Scavenger Hunt: Griffin School Gear quest takes you to a place called Dragonslayer’s Grotto, near Downwarren. It is an underground building full of Wraiths and an Ekimmara, and they are guarding the diagrams hidden within. If you’re unlucky, which I was, then a nearby level 20 Leshen can sometimes fall into the Dragonslayer’s Grotto and fight with you in the narrow passageways! It’s a bug, but the Leshen obviously can fall through the ground above and end up in the underground cave with you. It killed me (I was only level 10 at the time), but I re-loaded to before going into the Dragonslayer’s Grotto, and then went away to do something else, and to return later. When I did return later the Leshen wasn’t there.
